WhatsApp Business API vs. regular WhatsApp for automation
When the WhatsApp Business app is enough, when you need the official API, and risks to avoid with unauthorized tools.
In the Dominican Republic, WhatsApp is the default sales and support channel. The question isn't whether to automate WhatsApp, but on what technical foundation — without losing your number or customer trust.
Regular or Business app WhatsApp
Works when one or a few people reply, volume is low, and you don't need every conversation synced to a CRM. Quick replies, manual labels, and wa.me links from your site are enough.
- Practical limit: no official API for bots tied to the phone app.
- Risk: unauthorized tools can get your number blocked.
- Best for: businesses still organizing operations and defining processes.
WhatsApp Business API (Cloud API)
The official path for serious automation: approved templates, multiple agents, webhooks, and shared state with CRM or n8n. What we use when the channel must be part of a system, not an isolated chat.
- Bidirectional conversations with business rules and human handoff.
- Native integration with CRM, spreadsheets, or an ops panel.
- Template costs and approval: flows must be designed, not just “plug in a bot”.
How to decide without overselling
If the bottleneck is simply slow human response, sometimes organizing shifts comes before API setup. If you're losing leads because there's no follow-up, CRM state, or reminders, the API is often the next logical step — always inside a flow design, not as a patch.
